• usermod -- alter anything but a password
• usermod won't change file ownership outside of if you alter the UID
• usermod won't rename directories
• chfn -- user can change their own GECOS information
• all file ownership is tracked by numeric UID and GID
• userdel -r fred -- wipes out fred and his
• leaves fred in all groups
